Breeding Hamsters
Before you decide to breed your own hamsters. You should consider that hamster breeding is not to be entered into lightly. You will have to find homes for all your babies or keep them yourself. Local pet shops may take your unwanted hamsters but don’t bank on this. Check with them as they may already have a surplus to requirement. There may be others in your area breeding hamsters.
The only way hamsters will not or can not breed is if you keep the sexes apart! Permanently! Unless you intend to get into breeding hamsters do not even let the boys and girls play together! Hamsters Breed! It should be noted that in the wild dwarf hamsters pair for life. They can produce a litter as often as one a month but generally four or five litters a year are more likely. Female hamsters seem to know that you can over do the proliferation of the species! Some females will only have one litter and then call it a day.
The average pregnancy lasts twenty one days. A pregnant hamster doesn’t look much different to one that isn't, but she may start to act differently to usual. She may send the male packing if they normally occupy the same sleeping quarters. This is more likely after the birth of her babies. If she can normally be handled quite easily and suddenly starts objecting to you handling her, this may be a sign she is nesting.
It is important that the baby hamsters are sexed and separated from each other as soon as possible after they are weaned. The male babies should be removed from their mother before they are six weeks old as they may father half brothers and sisters with her. Female babies can be left with a solitary mother indefinitely so long as she will tolerate them but must be removed before they are six weeks old as well if the father is cohabiting with the mother hamster. Unless of course you want a pregnant hamster again!
