Dwarf Hamster Cages
Dwarf hamster cages are not generally available. To our knowledge the only dwarf specific hamster cage is The Habitrail Mini system. The design is a bit boring but it is specifically designed for mice and dwarf hamsters. The bars as well as the accessories (such as the Fly Wheel and
Mush-Room) have been specifically designed to be used safely by smaller pets. The smaller bars allow for a better grip, making climbing easier.
Habitrail say: "The Habitrail Mini is an all-new adventure for you and your little buddy to explore together." We chose the Rotastak system and made some minor adaptions.
There are adaptations for you to make on regular hamster cages that will make life easier for your dwarf hamster.
Dwarf hamster cages tip #1
If there are smooth vertical tubes incorporated into the design of the cage, then the addition of ‘mouse’ ladders will make it possible for a dwarf hamster to climb a lot easier. Just hooking the ladders over the top lip or the tube may only result in them being dislodged within a few hours. We made small holes just below the gnaw rings allowing the ladder hooks to be pushed through the plastic from the inside. The ladder was also secured to the tube lower down, to keep it tight against the plastic. In our experience, if this is omitted then the hamster may get trapped behind the ladder and will not be able to move up or down.
Dwarf hamster cages tip #2
The bigger the floor area of your cage covered with litter the less often you will have to clean your cage out!
Dwarf hamster cages tip #3
A plastic cage will be lighter to lift than a glass tank.
