Roborovski Dwarf Hamsters
Latin Phodopus
Raborovskii - Raborovski Dwarf Hamster is now more commonly known as The
Roborovski Dwarf Hamster or Roborovski Hamster. You may see both or either spelling
in pet related texts. The latter is now more unilaterally accepted.
The Roborovski hamster is definitely the smallest (and possibly the cutest)
of all the dwarf hamsters available in the UK. It looks more like a baby hamster
or miniature hamster than a dwarf. A well rounded little hamster with fur covered
feet and very short tail. With an adult total body measurement of around 5 cm
(2 inches) in length they are not really a handlable pet hamster for young children
at all and not recommended as such. They make highly unpredictable and lightning
fast movements. They have a lively disposition, making them a highly watchable
subject in their cage environment. They are more suited to responsible older
children, teenagers or adults as pets.
The Roborovski Dwarf Hamster in its natural form is a sandy golden colour
with the roots of
the hairs grey with an almost white underside and eyebrows. Unlike
its Chinese Hamster and Russian Hamster cousins the Roborovski Hamster has no
dark spinal stripe. There are lighter colour variations appearing now.
Like other dwarf hamsters Roborovski hamsters can be kept in small, same sex, groups as a ‘colony’.
